A humble opinion from a list observer -- Really need to remove the FAQ? Just some modification isn't enough? I guess the whole problem is that the explanation given made readers that the issue is *still open*, but actually it's not. Virtually, it's semi-closed.

So, I guess it will suffice to add a clause like the following to suggest:

We have considered such possibilities as /usr/local/fink, /opt/fink,
but none of them convinced us that they are more desirable than
/sw for many reasons, both technical or practical.

Kow

If the Fink community is not interested in abandoning /sw for the sake of standards compliance (or any other reason) then perhaps the statement regarding the choice of /sw "If you have a better suggestion, post it to the fink-devel mailing list" should be removed from the FAQ.

 My vote is for /opt/fink.
Just to clarify this, there is nothing to vote on here. There are no serious reasons to abandon /sw, but many good reasons not to do it - one of them being backward compatibility, we don't want to force 99% of fink users to redo their complete fink installation.

Also, Fink is *not* just using /sw/fink. We are using /sw. That's a difference.
