Thanks for bringing this up, Mike.  I'm redirecting my reply to fink-devel
rather than fink-users.

There are some definite issues here for the fink development team.  I would
suggest that fink packages which use java need to be tested by their
maintainers.  If any package needs to verify that the correct java version
is installed, we can implement a virtual "java" fink package which tests the
version number.
