Yes that would be a good idea, and might be a good solution for this whole tool, and some other issues. Since I see no way to reliably find out if /sw/bin/init.csh is being loaded, this would nicely solve the problem, I guess. We still would want to do any checks we can in order to avoid having 20 "source" lines in the .cshrc files of our users :-)
IMHO there is a better way than using an environment variable. The environment variable will not prevent the same path to added twice if it has been set beforehand by another script. I submitted [1] some time ago a different version of the /sw/bin/init.csh which defines an alias addpath, which adds the new path only if it isn't already included.
