Dear Roy and Dave:

I really don't mean to be difficult, but I think the problem is that the warning really isn't strong enough, i.e., it says "you should be careful to run sudo gcc_select 3 prior to any "fink build" or "fink install" commands," which makes "may prevent certain Fink packages from being compiled at all if you install this update" a bit ambiguous-sounding. It leaves the impression that it is easy to undo the damage, depending on how you read "at all."

Maybe something like "many programs requiring fortran, f2c or fort77 will not compile either under gcc 3.1 or 3.3 if you install this patch" might be better.

A lot of us found out the hard way that this alone doesn't get you back to a functioning fink installation. In my case I found out about this first from a colleague, Phil Evans, who has written more fortran than I have English. So although I am certainly a naive user, not everyone who has encountered this is.

Thanks.

Bill

In all fariness, there has been a lot of discussion of this on the list, and when gcc3.3 first came out there were specific warnings that a lot of packages might not work with it (check the archives). I am noted for being pretty dense (such as not seeing that a site gave you the login and passwd as you accessed it), but I did pick up those warnings on the list which is why I haven't installed the new > compiler.

If gcc 3.3 is again responsible for this, I think fink either needs to fix this now or tell people not to install the patch. Merely switching back to 3.1 doesn't solve these problems.

Are you by any chance using gcc 3.3 or have you installed the recent "patch" to the developer tools? This broke g77 for me and I could not restore functionality until I re-installed the entire Dec 2002 Developer Tools.
