In all fariness, there has been a lot of discussion of this on the list, and when gcc3.3 first came out there were specific warnings that a lot of packages might not work with it (check the archives). I am noted for being pretty dense (such as not seeing that a site gave you the login and passwd as you accessed it), but I did pick up those warnings on the list which is why I haven't installed the new compiler.
