Martin,

If I uncomment that line, fink gives a circular dependency error. As is
often the case with those errors, I've been unable to track down why.

Bootstrapping from 0.14.0 should work OK.

The whole line is not needed, just gettext-dev. After installing gettext-dev (which was already built at this stage, just not installed), the compilation went through without problem.

I haven't tried bootstrapping completely from a fink tarball; where does libintl.h come from in that case? Or is it not needed by dpkg-bootstrap?

I am trying to imitate the upgrading routes that users can take. On one system I took a rather populated gcc-3.1 fink system, changed the dists symlink and the compiler to gcc3.3 and said "fink selfupdate". This went surprisingly smoothly. Xfree was a self-compiled 4.3.99 (with gcc-3.1, not yet recompiled), but this didn't seem to pose problems.

Now I am going the fink-5.3-bindist + upgrade route with X11-Apple-beta3. This showed me already that Ben Reed's latest patch to my scribus package has to go, it doesn't work with xfree-4.2.
