I think I might be the one responsible for the suggestion that we should "hide" the location where we store Fink applications. I was under the impression -- which I now discover is incorrect -- that /sw was hidden in the Finder by default.
(This raises an interesting question about whether we should in fact hide /sw, but let's set that aside for now.) I still think that there is a lot to be said for treating our installation location for .apps, namely /sw/Applications, as a directory in which users will not modify what is there. And I still see some value to putting symlinks or Aliases out in some other location, where users can do what they like with them (and which will be found in the normal scheme of things). But I agree that dumping all these .apps directly into /Applications is not the best. Perhaps we should create /Applications/Fink/ to hold our symlinks or Aliases? As a possible implementation, I suggest that we create a new fink command "Applications:" where you would list the applications that are present, and then Fink would automatically create the symlinks or Aliases in a postinstall script. (And I have to admit I haven't understood why Aliases should be preferred here... a command-line-oriented program like Fink will have an easier time manipulating symlinks, I would think.) -- Dave ------------------------------------------------------- The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration See the breadth of Eclipse activity.
