Here's an extended quote from Apple's Human Interface Guidelines document:
By default, applications should be installed in /Applications, where they are accessible to all users on that particular computer. It may be appropriate to install some applications in the Applications folder in a user?s home folder. (This folder is not there by default, but if created, will be understood by the system.) Ultimately, users should be able to install files anywhere they want, but since Launch Services looks in these suggested folders when searching for compatible applications, you might want to encourage users to install their applications in one of these two locations with the default installation option. Note: Launch Services also looks in the subfolders of /Applications and in ~/Applications, in /Developer/Applications and its subdirectories. This is my motivation for saying that we should put our symlinks into /Applications, or possibly a subfolder /Applications/Fink. Also, the more I think about it, the more I think that we should also start treating /sw on the same footing as /etc and /usr, and get the Finder to treat /sw as a hidden file (presumably by editing /.hidden, but there may be other methods). -- Dave ------------------------------------------------------- The SF.Net email is sponsored by EclipseCon 2004 Premiere Conference on Open Tools Development and Integration See the breadth of Eclipse activity.
