dpkg does in the docs yes, but I've tested it with apt and dpkg and it doesn't hurt anything...but what ever I'll play god and change the upstream version.

This was explained in detail on the list, Justin. The dpkg specification explicitly forbids using "_" in the version, and in fact our specs never allowed it, either (though we never explicitly forbid it, either).
