In light of the apparent continued need for Fontmap (which is not in Wierda's distribution), I've chosen #1.
Wondering how GW's ghostscript can function without a Fontmap file, I spent some more time with this, and it seems it is more complicated:
There is actually a Fontmap file in GW's ghostscript, as in Fink's ghostscript, too! It is in {/usr/local,/sw}/share/ghostscript/%v/lib. There is Fontmap, and it includes Fontmap.GS. The latter has definitions for all the fonts including those in the ghostscript-fonts-std (which is what the Fink package ghostscript-fonts contains) and the ghostscript-fonts-other collections (GW-ghostscript contains the fonts of both ghostscript-fonts-std and ghostscript-fonts-other).
The Fontmap file in .../share/ghostscript/fonts, when present, is used. But it is not needed and is actually harmful.
Another thing is that the fonts installed by Fink's ghostscript-fonts package are in reality *not used* by /sw/bin/gs from the system-ghostscript8 package. Look at "gs -h": I says
Search path: . : /usr/local/share/ghostscript/8.13/lib : /usr/local/share/ghostscript/8.13/Resource : /usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts
Or start gs and run loadallfonts. You see that they are loaded from /usr/local, not from /sw.
Based on what I learned, I adapted the system-ghostscript8, ghostscript-fonts, and ghostscript packages so that
- system-ghostscript8 goes back to what it did before, minus running type1inst in the fonts directory. It does not need to depend on ghostscript-fonts.
- ghostscript-fonts installs both the ghostscript-fonts-std and the ghostscript-fonts-other collections. No type1inst.
- ghostscript is updated to the latest stable version 8.13
I put the package descriptions into my exp directory. Please comment.
