So, who broke the tree?  Why is there a dependency on something that
cannot exist?

Seriously: Could you give us some more information? Are you on 10.3 or on 10.4? What do you get from 'fink list perl5'?

On 10.3 you should get a line that says:
p   perl581-core                           [virtual package]
Do you get that?
