A C++ wrapper is now included with pcre, though I couldn't guarantee that it's a drop-in replacement.
I would be glad if I could get rid of pcre++, since I'm not activelymaintaining the package anymore. Also, I haven't ever heard of anybody whouses it...
I just checked, and there aren't any packages that depend on pcre++.
If nobody disagrees - how do I go about removing it? Should I submit anitem to the "package requests" tracker?
