Martin,
   I think I have pinpointed the problem with my gcc4.info package.
The change...

-Depends: gmp-shlibs (>= 4.1.4-1), libmpfr1-shlibs, cctools (>= 576-1) |
odcctools (>= 576-20050327), %N-shlibs, libiconv
+Depends: gmp-shlibs (>= 4.1.3-11), cctools (>= 576-1) | odcctools (>=
576-20050327), %N-shlibs (= %v-%r), libiconv

...seems to be the origin of the problem. If I delete the (= %v-%r) from
after %N-shlibs on the Depends line of my gcc4.info, the build proceeds
without complaint. However I think this is exposing breakage in fink. I added
the (= %v-%r) to the Depends line of gcc4.info to make sure that the gcc4
installed always matched the gcc4-shlibs installed in both version and
reversion. You might want to look at this bug in fink. It should be easily
reproducible under 10.4-transitional or 10.4 unstable by adding (= %v-%r)
to %N-shlibs on the Depends line.
           Jack
