One possible remaining difference might be whether Bernadette and Kevin both have the same X11 setup, e.g. official components only vs. using the macosforge updates. I've been on the road away from my Mac for a few weeks, so I haven't had an easy way to test out what all of the updates have been doing. Also, (for Bernadette): You're not setting the DISPLAY environment variable by any chance? (you shouldn't be) And if not, it's probably worth seeing if bluefish exhibits the same behavior when started from an xterm instead of a Terminal.app window.
