gdl proper has other problems _ besides plplot.
I find (on 10.5/intel) traces a.o. of:
1) even on 32bit,
> checking for SDstart in -lmfhdf... yes
> checking for sd_nccreate in -lmfhdf... no
>
> Error! HDF4 needs to be configured with the --disable-netcdf option
> in order to be used with the original netCDF library
> (-alt suffixed HDF4 packages in case of Debian)
> Check the INSTALL file of the HDF4 package for details
> ### execution of ./configure failed, exit code 255
2) on 64bit, there is further the dep on hdf ..
hdf can't be built as is because of its dep on g95, which itself
doesn't build
("Configuration x86_64-apple-darwin9 not supported").
Trying to substitute for that a dep on gcc45 (or any gcc4X I guess
_ doesn't seem a compiler issue _), one gets at the start of the build
trouble with (the patched) hdfi.h, starting with :
