Alexander,

After doing a bit of research the problem was with an deprecated
function (SANE_CAP_ALWAYS_SETTABLE) in the sane.h (the backend for
xsane) header; xsane 0.995-4 won't build w/o this.

My solution was to download the .tar for a newer version of xsane, put
it in /sw/src and put a modified xsane.info [only changing Version:
0.998 and Revision: 1] in /sw/.../local/finkinfo.  That built without
errors and appears to be working.
