The magic words depend on what exactly fails and how you tried ...

Nevertheless, it is probably not too practical to downgrade a large 
package such as XFree86 ... you probably must remove the 4.2 version 
before attempting anything and that might break any apps installed in 
the X11R6 directory ... I'm new to Fink but I don't think it will let 
you uninstall while there are dependent packages installed and a force 
remove might remove shared libraries and other stuff ... Good luck
