In order to build software from source, such as what you can obtain with
Fink, you need to download the free, 200+ megabytes Developer's Tools kit
from Apple. Sign up for a free account at (I think) connect.apple.com. The
latest verion should be from Dec 2001, with a couple of minor updates
since then. You minimally need to get the Dec devtools kit before you can
install anything with Fink (and if you want to write pure OSX software,
you might want the update patches too -- they aren't very big at all).

Once you have installed this kit, using Fink gets significantly easier :)
