Earlier on, while looking around on my system, I noticed during an
apt-cache search, that there was a package called system-xtools. Being a
fan of xtools, I decided to replace the system-xfree86 with
system-xtools. Assuming foolishly that it would actually *improve* my
system to have the correct package installed.

Unfortunately, as is often the case with fink packages, system-xtools is
broken, and does this when I attempt to install it...

Your Xtools installation is incomplete. The following files are missing:
  /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm /usr/X11R6/bin/xrdb /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.dylib /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.dylib
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xlib.h
You may have to reinstall Xtools.

I decided to try reinstalling system-xfree86, but this happened...

It looks like you have Xtools installed, not XFree86. You should install
the system-xtools package instead. There are some subtle differences
between the two. If you installed XFree86 on top of Xtools, you may want
to wipe it out and do a clean install of XFree86 to avoid some potential
problems.

So I decided to delete xtools, so that I could install system-xfree86,
and then install xtools afterwards and return my sytstem to the useful
and working state it was at before I stupidly tried to fix something
that didn't seem to be even faintly broken.

Unfortunately, xfree86 keeps harping on about xtools being installed
even though I've deleted it, and whenever I try to install an
application that depends on x11, apt complains that x11 isn't installed.
Can someone please tell me how to show apt that xtools is *NOT*
installed, so that I can then install system-xfree86, then install
xtools again so that I can actually start using my computer again. I
don't want to have to re-install my whole system if I can possibly help
it.
