This is something I'm still trying to solve this. The short-term fix is 
to suppress the splash screen by setting the variable 
inhibit-startup-message to be non-nil. The easiest way to do this is by 
using customize, e.g., type:

M-x customize-variable[ret]
inhibit-startup-message[ret]

and then saving it for future sessions via the <state> widget.

I swear I'll figure the problem out (or more accurately find time to do 
so) eventually...
