If you don't use Project Builder/Interface Builder, the benefits will
be minimal.  You will get a prerelease of gcc 3.1 which will be the
system compiler in Mac OS X 10.(1+x), so if you maintain Fink packages
and want to test them with 3.1, or if you've been experiencing issues
that you think a newer gcc will fix, then you might want to try it.
