Well, how did you install it the first time? Apple's Perl is isn't in
/usr/local, it's in /usr. If you have anything Perlish in /usr/local,
you or someone using your system put it there. What do you get from:
% which perl
or, after updating your 'locate' database if necessary:
% sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb
% locate perl | more
The first will hopefully give you something like /usr/local/bin/perl or
/usr/bin/perl. For the latter, the update step will take a long time
(several minutes at best), then the second line will produce a [looong]
list of files containing the string 'perl', including but not limited to
the actual command & any libraries. Pay attention to anything this notes
in your /usr/local, /usr, /Library/Perl, and /System/Library/Perl dirs (as
long as you get hits in the latter three, things aren't that bad).
It *may* be possible to just move that file or the /usr/local directory
out of the way ("mv /usr/local /usr/distant") and see if that helps. That
of course will break anything else you've put in /usr/local, but it could
at least help determine if you still have Apple's Perl. Alternatively, you
might be able to reinstall a new Perl over whatever you may have there
using http://duke.usask.ca/~dalglb/macosx/Perl_5.6.html as a starting
point to walk you through the process.
