Thanks for the hint. Removing the ~/.mozilla directory fixes mozilla. 
Not so for gnome-terminal

Thanks. Just tried that, but no dice. Looks like I'll have to do some 
more digging.

Should I file a bug report for the gnome-terminal and theme weirdness.

The exact problem with gnome-terminal is that it presents the usual 
locale warnings, opens a very small window, and then promptly presents 
the standard gnome bug box: Application has crashed with a fatal error: 
(Bus error). For the themes problem, all I get is: Gtk-WARNING **: 
Unable to locate loadable module in module_path: "libpixmap.so".
