I got a bug report from Peter N. Lewis about something similar. Something had made /sw/bin/tar and /sw/bin/gzip zero length on his system. This sounds like the same thing.
If you "sudo rm /sw/bin/tar /sw/bin/gzip" things may begin to work again.. You should then of course rebuild/reinstall finks tar and gzip :) Peter On Friday, May 17, 2002, at 10:16 PM, Alexander Hansen wrote: > > On Thu, 16 May 2002, Andrew Ho wrote: > >> Many people have posted concerning similar versions of this >> problem, which >> happens whenever you install any package: >> >> http://www.mail-archive.com/cgi- >> bin/htsearch?method=and&format=short&config=fink-users_lists_sourceforge_net& >> restrict=&exclude=&words=doesn%27t+exist+package+description >> >> [rains-01-14h4:~] adho% fink reinstall tar >> sudo /sw/bin/fink reinstall tar >> Password: >> Reading package info... >> Information about 931 packages read in 7 seconds. >> curl -f -L -s -S -O ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.13.19.tar.gz >> mkdir -p /sw/src/tar-1.13.19-1 >> tar -xzf /sw/src/tar-1.13.19.tar.gz >> Failed: directory /sw/src/tar-1.13.19-1/tar-1.13.19 doesn't >> exist, check >> the package description >> >> I have read one suggestion to reinstall fink keeping >> everything in place. >> How is that done? > > Maybe just run the Mac installer (if that's how you installed it) again > without deleting any directories/files? > >> >> Another suggestion is here >>> All right- I got fink to work by renaming /sw/bin/gzip to >>> gzip.old and >>> symlinking /sw/bin/gzip to /usr/bin/gzip (gunzip, too).
