I got a bug report from Peter N. Lewis about something similar. 
Something had made /sw/bin/tar and /sw/bin/gzip zero length on 
his system. This sounds like the same thing.

If you "sudo rm /sw/bin/tar /sw/bin/gzip" things may begin to 
work again..

You should then of course rebuild/reinstall finks tar and gzip :)
