Jeff, Alex and Stephen, Following the Xemacs thread from May 29...If you guys found a solution since then, please let me know. I don't think it's due to xemacs, but rather to the new xfree distribution. I was using xemacs-21.4.5 fine until earlier today I updated xfree (was using 4.1.0-9 fink based and loaded the 4.2.0 binaries from fink today ) and installed KDE (which works great by the way). Apparently the KDE install did not touch my xemacs, so it's gotta be something in the interaction between xemacs and the new xfree release... F.
