Umm -- I hate to tell you, but it's working over here. 8-)
Mind you, I have a local queue set up to send jobs to a remote
queue, I do *not* have a direct connection to the network printer
from my OSX box. Perhaps that's the difference.

I'm not sure whether CUPS can print directly to a network device,
or whether it can only print to a remote LPD queue. I suspect the
latter.
In order to get my linux, solaris, and osx machines printing to
our network HPs here, I had to install the jetdirect software on
one solaris server, and set up a print queue there; then all the
other unixen send jobs to that remote queue.
In short, I suspect that HP would need to provide jetdirect
printer software for the OSX/Darwin platform.
Or, perhaps I'm completely out to lunch.
Also, Sebastien -- thanks for the tip about 'atprint', I didn't
know about that...
