Alright I figured it out.

It seems that the file:
/sw/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/control
gets extracted using the first gzip that gets encountered in your path.  I 
removed the /sw/bin/gzip and re-ran the install and it worked.

I sent this email yesterday and didn't hear anything.  I find it hard to 
believe that no one out there has any clue as to how to clear up this error. 
How do I get this package reinstalled?  It is one of the packages that has the 
zero length files in /sw/bin.
