I'm having the same problem in two different machines, it seems to be
related to upgrading OS X to 10.1.5.

I can't use fink at all, every package I try to install fails after
downloading the files and creating directories, I have traced the
problem to tar not being able to uncompress the archive, if I use the
standard OS X tar (or even fink's tar preceding it with a /usr/bin/zcat
and a pipe) I can uncompress it (but of course the syntax is not
compatible with fink).

This means that I can't even run fink selfupdate.

I'm running a cvs version of fink on one of the macs, and a standard
version on the other. (Package manager version: 0.9.11, Distribution
version: 0.4.0.cvs)

I wasn't able to upgrade through the binary version (apt-get update and
such), as it seems that there is some server problem (apt-get does not
give me enough information to debug the problem). Suffice it so say that
<apt-get --reinstall install zlib> gives me the message: "Sorry,
re-installation of zlib is not possible, it cannot be downloaded." Plus
several other error messages related to the unstable branch.

Please help, I don't really want to re-install my whole /sw directory!!!!
