Out of curiosity, what do you get when you try the following?

    % ls /sw/bin/*{tar,zip}
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 chris  unknown 380900 Jul  8 17:24 /sw/bin/bonobo-moniker-gunzip
    lrwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel        4 Jul 29 22:42 /sw/bin/gnutar -> gtar
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 root   admin   523372 Feb 27 11:34 /sw/bin/gtar
    -rwxr-xr-x  3 root   admin    70036 Apr  3 08:23 /sw/bin/gunzip
    -rwxr-xr-x  3 root   admin    70036 Apr  3 08:23 /sw/bin/gzip
    lrwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel        3 Jul 29 22:42 /sw/bin/jstar -> joe
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 root   admin       82 Apr  5 22:55 /sw/bin/mxtar
    lrwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel        6 Jul 29 22:42 /sw/bin/mzip -> mtools
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 chris  unknown   4862 Jun 25 00:31 /sw/bin/smbtar
    lrwxr-xr-x  1 root   wheel        4 Jul 29 22:42 /sw/bin/tar -> gtar

It would be interesting if your output didn't roughly match that. A lot
of people have been reporting random errors with zero size files in the
tar / zip family of commands, and an explanation for this oddity has yet
to emerge. Regardless of what's causing it, the issue can lead to many
other problems in using Fink, and can only be corrected by reinstalling
these commands [from the fileutils package? I forget...]. The fix isn't
that hard to do, but it shouldn't be necessary in the first place... :/

> <apt-get --reinstall install zlib> gives me the message: "Sorry,
> re-installation of zlib is not possible, it cannot be downloaded."

Hmm. Could this be related? Somehow I doubt it, but we've had very few
clues to go on. Maybe the suggestion that zlib is related will help.

> Please help, I don't really want to re-install my whole /sw directory!!!!

Try the above tests, and if you get zero file sizes for anything in
/sw/bin -- particularly gzip, gtar, etc -- then [re]install fileutils. If
this is on the right track, I'll poke through the archives [or you can]
for details regarding how to do this if you need more info; if the problem
is elsewhere then ok we'll try looking elsewhere instead.
