I get the same output:

[ldx3:~] hansen% freetype-config --libs --cflags
-I/sw/include/freetype2 -I/sw/include
-L/sw/lib -lfreetype
[ldx3:~] hansen% imlib-config --libs --cflags
-L/sw/lib -lImlib -L/sw/lib -ljpeg -ltiff -lgif -lpng -lz -lm
-L/usr/X11R6/lib -lSM -lICE -lXext -lX11
-I/sw/include -I/usr/X11R6/include

My freetype-config is /sw/bin/freetype-config, as installed by
freetype2-2.0.8-4 (this is probably obvious).
