my bad it  puts in in /usr/local/lib -- they aren't being so bad as to
overwrite system files. The install seems to be a very unixy
/usr/local install.

What I was really curious about was which one was the most current and
given my current environment does not have a LOAD_LIBRARY_PATH setting
(I'm not sure about the spelling of the environment variable) which
version gets used. I don't believe there currently is an Apple
provided dlcompat, but fink provides one as a package.
