Hunh. A few seconds after my previous post, the rebuilds finished. I was about to try reinstalling -base and -rootless, but then thought I better try launching XDarwin first just to see if anything changed. Well, it launched and I was able to open an xterm, so I think everything is fixed!

Interestingly, near the end of the CLI output for rebuilds of both base and rootless, I still saw this warning:

dpkg: serious warning: files list file for package `system-xfree86' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed.
18638 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace xfree86-rootless 4.2.1.1-1 (using .../xfree86-rootless_4.2.1.1-1_darwin-powerpc.deb) ...

I guess I can safely ignore that warning, and forget about the system-xfree86 package, since everything seems to be working OK...

Thanks for your patient assistance, Alexander, and thanks again to all those working on Fink. I continue to look forward to figuring out all the cool features available to me from the open source community, through Fink, that can increase my efficiency and productivity at work. Its a steep learning curve, but I'm enjoying the ride!
