Dear Alexander, David --

Many thanks for the suggestions. I went ahead and installed the Dec
2002 Dev Tools. Then "fink selfupdate"

g77 is right there in /sw/bin/ and "fink install g77" says there is
nothing to install.

Then, "fink install r-base", but it fails with exactly the same errors
as before:

---------
 :
 :
checking size of long double... 8
checking whether gcc accepts -M for generating dependencies... yes
checking whether gcc supports -c -o FILE.lo... yes
checking how to get verbose linking output from /sw/bin/g77... configure: WARNING:
compilation failed

checking for Fortran 77 libraries...
checking for dummy main to link with Fortran 77 libraries... none
checking for Fortran 77 name-mangling scheme... configure: error: cannot compile a
simple Fortran program
See `config.log' for more details.
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
### execution of (export failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling r-base-1.6.2-1 failed
--------

I don't know is this is relevant, but these are the outputs of
information about fink:

15> fink -V
Package manager version: 0.12.0
Distribution version: 0.5.1.cvs

16> fink describe fink
Information about 1034 packages read in 1 seconds.

fink-0.12.0-1: The Fink package manager

Any suggestions would be very helpful...

Thanks!
