I posted a week or two ago about a strange problem in which mu USB printer (Canon BJC-85) prints fine under OS-X, but lp (and printing from all FINK apps) don't work at all. After many frustrations I've solved the problem, and I want to post my solution in case others reading the archives have the same problem.
Note: Installing gimp-print will not immediately solve the problem, and none of the docs that come with it explain the solution. The solution was: 1) delete the printer previously set up with the OS-X supported BJC drivers, and don't use those drivers, even though they work on native OS-X applications 2) install EPS-ghostscript and gimp-print 3) follow the directions at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_FAQ_OS_X.php3 That page includes a non-intuitive step to add a printer using the Advanced menu of the Print Center. 4) manually edit the BJC-85 PPD file, changing the default resolution to 720x360. I can now print just like before from my OS-X apps, but also from Gimp and OpenOffice, and from the command line with lp.
