I just realized something. Did you used to have some other X installed before Apple's X11, and did you install Apple X11 over it? There is no fontconfig in Apple's X11, so you shouldn't be trying to link against libfontconfig at all... It sounds like you mix-and-matched stuff at some point.
You are right. I had installed and removed a couple of Xs before I installed Apple's X beta 3. I remember I installed it over manually installed xfree 4.3.0. I found the following files in the directory /usr/X11R6/lib libfreetype.6.2.dylib, libfreetype.6.3.dylib, libfreetyp.6.dylib, libfreetype.a, libfreetype.dylib, libfontconfig.1.0.dylib, libfontconf.a, libfontenc.a, libfontconfig.1.dylib, libfontconfig.dylib and in the directory /sw/lib libfreetype.6.3.2.dylib, libfreetype.6.dylib, libfreetype.a, libfreetype.dylib, libfreetype.la (no libfontconfig files).
So, should I remove the files in /usr/X11R6/lib?
Yes, you've definitely got problems if you mix-n-matched. I don't know the whole list of what's different, but basically your best bet is to delete /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11, and then reinstall apple's X11.
