Try this: I had the same issue after a hard drive crash.... I needed to reinstall my fink distro and the gnome didn't quite work right after that. After a LOT of debugging, I found that gnome is looking for a certain file at startup..... try:
touch ~/.gnome2/fink-upgrade-stage-1 Keep your .xinitrc the way it was before.
