I think you're wrong, the CVS/Root file, if it already existed from a
different archive, would set an incorrect value for CVSROOT.  It would be
a correctable problem, by explicitly using the -D option to cvs, so as to
force the correct CVSROOT regardless of the value in CVS/Root.

except that fink CD's to /sw/fink before doing the selfupdate-cvs, so it has nothing to do with your current location. I believe Alexander is right...
