Thanks.  That would be a great idea if I still had the .deb file.  I 
have limited disk space so I delete those fairly regularly.  I'm trying 
to build it on the desktop now, so we'll see how that turns out.  If it 
builds on the desktop, though, I'll be fairly baffled about what the 
problem is, since the setups should be the same.

One option you might consider is to copy the .deb file over from your 
desktop to the laptop, and then install it manually (sudo dpkg -i).
