Well, dx will no longer compile on my desktop either, so it seems possible that it's xfree86 4.3.0 that's causing things to break. From a quick look, though, it appears that the version I had built previously still runs OK.

One option you might consider is to copy the .deb file over from your desktop to the laptop, and then install it manually (sudo dpkg -i).
