Interesting hint; thanks. Nothing showed up in either of the crash logs, though. GIMP still gives me the "Unknown file type" error.
Any other ideas? I removed and reinstalled GIMP with Fink about a month ago to try to remedy this problem, but there was no change.

This looks more or less correct to me: I wanted to see if you were missing any image converters by chance. Here's something to try: run the Console utilty:(in the Utilities folder of /Applications) and then run GIMP and try to open a file. It may be that a message will come up in the Console that will clarify the situation.

Next question then: what do you get from
fink list -i -s graphics
? I'll compare with my system to see if anything obvious is lacking.

Alexander,
Thanks for the quick reply. It doesn't matter whether I start GIMP from
the terminal or the Applications menu; it returns the same error.
Thanks for the link, but doing that to the Applications menu didn't affect the result, either.

You shouldn't need to chmod anything. Are you running gimp from a
terminal, or via the Applications menu? If the latter, then read the

Hi all,
I can't seem to import standard-format (JPEG, TIFF) photos into my
Fink-installed GIMP, and their Web site and help files do not cover
the problem. I've tried converting iPhoto pictures (JPG) into other
formats with Graphic Converter, but GIMP always gives me an "Unknown
file type" error. I've also changed some file permissions with chmod,
but still no joy. This is on an iMac, OSX 10.2.6, standard current
Fink installation (updated weekly) and Apple X11 beta 3.
It performs this way whether I have root permissions or not. What am
I doing wrong?
