Removing the files you suggested didn't solve the problem, so I removed GIMP with Fink and then did a Mass Destruction of anything on the system that contained "gimp" (except the .png files and that sort of thing). Then, I updated my Fink installation and installed GIMP from scratch with Fink Commander. The missing files appeared in the /sw/etc directory, the configuration went correctly, and it imports pictures now.
