OK I did what you told me . Now there's only one pb left: dselect does not work well on my terminal anymore: it starts good but when trying to choose pkgs to install the window beggins to flash with strange signs - as if I was displaying a binary file and no way to select anything.

The following additional package will be installed:
gawk
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
rm -rf gawk-3.1.0-3
mkdir -p /sw/src/gawk-3.1.0-3
tar -xzf /sw/src/gawk-3.1.0.tar.gz
Failed: directory /sw/src/gawk-3.1.0-3/gawk-3.1.0 doesn't exist, check the package description

I guess what happened is that the download failed and your file gawk-3.1.0.tar.gz is either incomplete or not a tar.gz file at all, but an html error message. Your fink program is so old that it even doesn't check md5 checksums, so it doesn't catch this error earlier on, as newer versions of fink would do.

it goes the same way with fink selfupdate-cvs.
I've checked permissions and it seems ok.
Do you think there is a way to get out of this mess?

fink -V
Package manager version: 0.9.11
Distribution version: 0.4.1a.cvs

There is certainly some stony upgrade path, but you would probably do yourself a favor by reinstalling the 0.5.3 distribution from scratch.
