Sorry, I should have clarified: when I said "followed the FAQ" I meant I really had done everything. I forgot to mention that I got a dpkg error. I don't remember exactly what, but it was something to the effect that some of the packages I'd specified weren't deleted, while other system-xfree packages were.

I just tried it again and got:

[localhost:~] me% sudo dpkg --remove -force-depends system-xfree86-42
Password:
dpkg: conflicting actions --field and --remove

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use dselect for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --licence for copyright licence and lack of warranty (GNU GPL) [*].

Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !

I don't remember whether that's the same error I got a couple weeks ago, or why I decided to go ahead with the install anyway. I was busy, and shamefully didn't document my system changes in my fink-notes.txt file. (Yes, I've really got a file with that name! And no, it's not empty.)

I realize the dpkg error may turn this not-really-a-problem into a whole 'nother issue. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait for any further help - or castigations and derogatory comments on my genetic history and intellectual heritage - until later this afternoon, when I return from parts yonder.

Thanks so far,
James

Umm...you didn't quite follow the FAQ, because it specifically says to remove system-xfree86:

http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/comp-packages.php#cant-install-xfree

Anyway, you can remove it, and system-xfree86-upgrade, by using

sudo dpkg --remove --force-depends <package>

where <package> is the name of the package--you'll have to do this for both individually.

I recently uninstalled Apple's X11 0.3, and migrated to XDarwin 4.3.0.
Everything works - well, X works, anyway - but I still have X 4.2.x
placeholders in my fink packages:

[localhost:~] me% fink list --installed
Information about 2551 packages read in 4 seconds.
<snip>
i system-xfree86-42 4.2-3 Placeholder: XFree86 4.2.x and
Apple X11 beta 3 i system-xfree86-upgr 1.0-1 (place-holder
package for upgrading broken installs) <snip>
i xfree86 4.3.0-15 XFree86 distribution
i xfree86-shlibs 4.3.0-15 XFree86 distribution

I followed the FAQ and docs and whatnot, so what's the system-xfree86
stuff still doing there? I'm only a Unix user, not a Unix guru, so if
you type slowly and don't use too many big words, I should be able to
follow your explanation. :)

Thanks -
