Is it possible to set Fink to run "nice" automatically? I noticed Gentoo's emerge had this feature. As we all know, compiling can be a major drain on using the system. As it is, I just type "nice" before any compilation, but I think it would benefit most people who might not know otherwise if such an option were on by default, plus it would save the rest of us a little bit of typing.

What I do is start Fink Commander then get its pid (say 496) then

renice 10 496

All fink commands then run at low priority. This has allowed me to use my G4 400MHz for the last 2 weeks while constantly compiling. I've been running this way for at least 6 months. The machine is somewhat sluggish but useable.

Murphy was definitely an optimist.
