I have no idea how this mess came upon! I use finkcommander to enable or disable the unstable tree (I have not enabled the unstable crypto). I never touced the fink.conf file by hand. Right now unstable is enabled. Except for the root3.patch I never changed anything myself in the 10.2-gcc3.3 directory:

DownloadMethod: curl
Trees: local/main stable/main stable/crypto local/bootstrap unstable/main
Mirror-gnome: ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/
Mirror-cpan: ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/languages/perl/CPAN/
Distribution: 10.2-gcc3.3

This mess has to result from somem bug in one of the version of fink/dpkg... I have had at some point.

I renamed 10.2-gcc3.3 and did a selfupdate again. I get many error messages of the kind:

finkinfo/w3m-ssl-0.4.1-11.info
/bin/cp: finkinfo/w3m-ssl-0.4.1-11.info/rsrc: No such file or directory
fopen: No such file or directory
stat finkinfo/w3m-ssl-0.4.1-11.info : No such file or directory
finkinfo/w3m-ssl-0.4.1-11.patch
finkinfo/wget-ssl-1.8.2-2.info
finkinfo/xchat-ssl.info
/bin/cp: finkinfo/xchat-ssl.info/rsrc: No such file or directory
fopen: No such file or directory
stat finkinfo/xchat-ssl.info : No such file or directory

And now roofitcore does not even exist anymore in my unstable list, while root3.10.01-11 is gack in the list (as unknown in place of sci category). It seems that packages I have like maxima are not even showing up at all!

find . -name "*roofit*" -ls

I did a fink index and then fink list roofitcore, with no luck.

Could it be that rsync is the problem:
rsync version 2.5.5 protocol version 26

It lives in /usr/local/bin and says:
rsync version 2.5.5 protocol version 26
There is an other one in /usr/bin but it is exactly the same binary. As for:

Somehow you have a great mix up between stable and unstable packages on your disk (see below). Did you copy the root3.info and roofitcore.info file to the local directory or do you have the full unstable tree enabled?

which is the version in the stable (gcc 3.3) tree. root3-cernlib does only exists in the unstable tree, i.e. wouldn't show up if you have only the stable tree enabled.

nothing with cernlib shows up in any stable or unstable 10.2-gcc3.3 tree:

paulinde# find . -name "*cernlib*" -ls

1574313 72 -rw-r--r-- 1 root admin 35322 Nov 1 21:40 ./10.2-gcc3.3-pb/unstable/main/finkinfo/sci/cernlib.patch

At that stage I am lost.

Thanks again.

root3 is the correct version for unstable (gcc3.3) trees

root3-threaded 3.05.07-13 Object-oriented data analysis framework root3-threaded-shlibs 3.05.07-13 Object-oriented data analysis framework

which is the version in the stable (gcc 3.3) tree. root3-cernlib does only exists in the unstable tree, i.e. wouldn't show up if you have only the stable tree enabled.

I reinstalled nevertheless. but when I try to install roofitcore I get: Information about 1925 packages read in 3 seconds. The following package will be installed or updated: roofitcore The following additional package will be installed: roofitcore-shlibs Do you want to continue? [Y/n] so it looks for root3-cernlib, while there is no such package! Is there again a wrong info file? Thanks

Those warnings tell you that the root3-cernlib package is not found. However, the root3 package which you reinstalled should nevertheless satisfy the dependency for roofitcore. Are you able to build roofitcore? It seems to me that your trees are terribly messed up. Could you check first that your trees-line in /sw/etc/fink.conf has both unstable and stable trees enabled and isn't broken into two lines? It should look like: Trees: local/main stable/main stable/crypto local/bootstrap unstable/main unstable/crypto Then I would try to move the directory /sw/fink/10.2-gcc3.3 out of the way and 'fink selfupdate' again. HTH, Remi

Hi Paul, Great you solved your first problem, though I have no idea what really went wrong. Concerning roofitcore: you are definitely missing the root3 install. What gives 'fink list root3'? I guess that somehow your package database thinks, that root3 is installed, but it isn't (anymore). Try 'fink reinstall root3' or whatever flavour of root3 you'd like. HTH, Remi
