I agree with you dude. Did I argue against this? I was simply correcting your (seeming) misunderstandings and FUD about what fink is capable of. We have to rely on dpkg's database, we have no choice in the current fink design.

I'll try to explain my attitude (I cannot let 'FUD' pass without replying). I think it is often useful to put oneself into a user's shoes who knows nothing (and doesn't want to know) about fink's internal workings. In the case of a perceived problem which a) was not completely obvious to diagnose and b) did not immediately suggest an obvious procedure for dealing with it in the future, this attitude can stimulate a discussion (as it did in this case) that leads to new results. If taking such an attitude makes me look like an ass sometimes, so be it.

In this case, I think I can summarize the lessons we learned:

1) If such an error "cannot install foo-x.y-z because no package description is available" appears in the future, we know now that we have to recommend to run "fink purge foo" before retrying. If the error came up several times, we would know what to write in the FAQ.

2) There might be a possibility to change how fink looks for the latest available version by eliminating removed but not purged package versions, but this might be very difficult, so it is not something someone will try to do soon.

3) When switching to new trees, it should be avoided to lower the highest available version number of a package. In particular, the global move from A/stable to B/unstable should be considered as something extremely temporary and should be made as short-lived as possible.
