I meant, I think, would Fink ever make a free kernel available for
download/installation. It would be nice to be able to get all my
system updates from one place. And not having to pay for further OS
X updates would be a boon. Indeed, if Fink maintained a separate
kernel w/ appropriate libraries (whether Linux or Darwin), it seems
to me that the system wouldn't be so destablized by major Apple OS
changes (like 10.2 -> 10.3).

Well, you can forget just mixing and matching things; macosx's architecture is such that it's basically not feasible to just drop in another kernel, or even a full base system in most cases (not in a way that makes all of macosx still work). And I can't imagine anyone being willing to repackage things from apple. Also, not everything in macosx's base system is in the darwin core, there are parts of the frameworks (and whole APIs) that aren't part of darwin, they're part of macosx only.

You wouldn't get a free upgrade from 10.2 to 10.3 just by getting the pure darwin differences, there's a lot more going on there.

Fink is a distribution first and foremost for Mac OS X. It is possible, with work, to run it on pure darwin, but that is nowhere near our focus. Our goal is to make getting UNIX stuff running on macosx easier, not to make getting macosx on unix stuff harder. =)
