A couple of points:

I just moved from Debian GNU/Linux to Mac OS X Panther on my TiBook. I am an ardent Debian user. I use it on all my servers and workstations, now with the exception of my TiBook. Debian is completely usable on the PPC platform. I used it for many months. All the software works like a charm. There are, however, some issues with it. None of the problems I have are with Debian itself, but the general lack of support for PPC Linux. Forget browser plugins (i.e. Flash, Shockwave, etc.). I tend to loathe over the top websites, but sometimes it is necessary to be able to view such a page. Java 1.4.x is also non-existant for PPC Linux. Once again, I don't particularly like Java (in fact, I hate it), but sometimes its necessary to get work done. I am enjoying my Mac OS X experience thus far, however, I don't think I would have enjoyed any revisions prior to Panther as much. The main reason I installed Linux in the first place was that the Virtual Desktop in Mac OS was quite hackish. I installed the GPL'd Desktop Manager as soon as I got Mac OS running, and let me tell you, it's quite amazing. As much as I love free software, I think I will enjoy being able to use Dreamweaver and Illustrator on Mac OS. As far as fink on Linux... well... a big portion of fink came FROM Linux. Namely, apt came from Debian. Debian's package management is, IMHO, the goal every package management system should try to reach. Hope this helped.

I don't think I would miss OS X very much, I would be kind of sad to
say goodbye to Fink! This leaves me with some questions.

Has anyone out there had experience slowly stripping the Apple OS down
until eventually it is gone and you've replaced it with a totally
free OS?

Can Fink operate from within GNU/Linux on a dual boot machine?

Any general experiences about GNU/Linux on PPC that seem worth
sharing?

Can someone more knowledgeable than me help me understand which
parts of the OS X system are free as in freedom and which are not?
Would it be possible to have a free OS that wasn't GNU/Linux but
instead GNU/Darwin?

Would Fink ever offer a replacement for the kernel??
