Hi,

I have had two versions of ghostscript installed for some time (fink's
and Gerben Wierda's), but now that system-ghostscript8 is available for
10.3 I tried to remove fink's ghostscript and gostscript-fonts and replace
them with system-ghostscript8.
Then I ran an update-all and got some related problems.
First of all the new system-ghostscript8 does not have ghostscript-fonts
in the "Provides" line, which I think it should, so fink wanted to install
ghostscript-fonts as a dependency.

No it should not. The new system-ghotscript8 does not provide ghostscript-fonts, because some of the fonts provided by the ghostscript from the i-Installer are broken.

I tried to modify the info file copying it to the local tree and adding
ghostscript-fonts to the Provides line.
At this point when I run update-all fink still wants to install
ghostscript among other additional packages.
Any idea why this happens despite the fact that system-ghostscript8
"provides" ghostscript?

No. This should not happen. Could you look with "apt-cache showpkg ghostscript" if you see something suspicious?

My guess is gpdf, because it seems to have a versioned dependency on ghostscript, and AFAIK virtual packages still do not satisfy versioned dependencies (or do they now?)

This is the list of packages to be updated/installed (gosh, I've been off-line for just a week!):

The following 74 packages will be installed or updated:
 autoconf2.5 automake1.6 bug-buddy compress-zlib-pm compress-zlib-pm581
 cyrus-sasl2-dev cyrus-sasl2-shlibs eel2 eel2-dev eel2-shlibs fort77 ggv
 gnome-games gnome-games-dev gnome-games-shlibs gnome-mime-data
gnome-session
 gnome-vfs2-ssl gnome-vfs2-ssl-dev gnome-vfs2-ssl-shlibs gnucash gnumeric
 gpdf gst-plugins gst-plugins-dev gst-plugins-shlibs intltool libbonobo2
[etc]

You could try to isolate the problem by running "fink update gpdf" etc.
