I did that originally but I can't install auctex with emacs21, it seems that it depends on emacs20.
can I change that somehow?

You should be able to: I've got auctex along with emacs21-xaw3d. If you install emacs21, then try to install auctex, what message do you get?
You may have a partially installed emacs20 package: try running
dpkg -l *emacs*
